DEVOTIONALS
(January 20)
A Voice from Heaven
Luke 3:21-22 (MEV)
“Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heavens were opened, [22] and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, ‘You are My beloved Son. In You, I am well pleased.’”
Jesus was in the river praying under an open heaven—a perfect picture of what prayer can be. There, He heard a voice from heaven: the Father’s voice. Jesus received affirmation from His Father.
We, too, have a Father in heaven who will affirm us, confirm His plan and purpose for us, and give us clear vision. We don’t have to figure things out on our own. Simply turn to your heavenly Father in prayer and receive the confidence to know and pursue His plan and purpose.

Bread to Feed On
Luke 11:2-4 (MEV)
“He said to them, ‘When you pray, say: Our Father, who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come; Your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. [3] Give us each day our daily bread. [4] And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.’”
Jesus taught His disciples how to approach the Father and what to say. We approach the Father with praise, worship, and thanksgiving. Thank Him for His goodness and compassion toward you. Praise brings a clear perspective. Pray for His will, plan, and purpose to be done in your life. Say yes to His will. Submitting to God’s will in prayer will help you establish priorities.
Open your Bible and ask the Father to feed you daily bread; He will speak to you through the Scriptures. Feeding on His Word brings provision into your life. If you need forgiveness or need to forgive others, do it in prayer. Maintaining your love walk starts with prayer—it leads to a life of purity. Finally, ask the Father for strength to overcome temptation. God will alert and protect you from the devil’s schemes. Covering these things in prayer positions you to clearly see and hear God’s plan and purpose for your life.

Praying in the Name
John 16:23-24 (MEV)
“On that day you will ask Me nothing. Truly, truly I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you. [24] Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
Jesus has given us His name to approach the Father. We don’t come to the Father on the merits of our own name but in Jesus’ name because of the work He did on the cross to redeem us from sin, sickness, poverty, and spiritual death.
When you pray in His name, it’s as if Jesus Himself is praying. When Jesus prayed, the Father always answered. We can be assured, no matter what the problem is, that the Father is present to answer when we use Jesus’ name. So pray with confidence in all of your decisions, crises, or life transitions. The more your prayers open up the plan of God, the more joy you will experience.

Peace: The Place of Clarity
Philippians 4:6-7 (MEV)
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with gratitude, make your requests known to God. [7] And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will protect your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
The place of peace is free of distraction, where you can sense the Spirit of God’s impressions upon your heart. Suddenly, you know things about His plan and see in your mind’s eye what things may look like for your future. The place of peace is the place of clarity, where you can take the next step into His plans. Your heart and mind will be free from distractions and agitations, enabling you to move forward in God’s plan.

Discerning All Things
1 John 2:27 (MEV)
“But the anointing which you have received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. For as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and just as it has taught you, remain in Him.”
When you were born again, you received the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, called the Anointing. The Anointing gives you the ability to know all things. As you pray, you will experience insights rising in your spirit. Capture these insights and journal them. These promptings from the Holy Spirit will never mislead you, as He is the Spirit of truth. He always magnifies Jesus and never contradicts His Word or teachings.

Knowing God’s Will
1 John 5:14-15 (MEV)
“This is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. [15] So if we know that He hears whatever we ask, we know that we have whatever we asked of Him.”
Knowing God’s will builds confidence in prayer. What is God’s will? God has expressed His will through His Word. Every believer’s identity and purpose are outlined in the New Testament epistles. To have a confident prayer life, you need a good foundation in the Word. God also gave us the Holy Spirit to reveal His specific will for your life, path, and destiny. Know His will so you can pray with confidence.

Eyes of the Heart
Ephesians 1:18-19 MEV
"That the eyes of your understanding may be enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of His calling and what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance among the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power."
We find three things the Spirit wants to establish in your life through this Spirit-inspired prayer that the Apostle Paul prayed—prayers you can also pray over yourself. God wants the eyes of your understanding to be opened:
To know and experience your purpose.
To know and experience your inheritance—your spiritual identity.
To know and experience God’s power and presence.
The more you seek after the Lord, the more these things will become a reality in your life. As you yield to the Holy Spirit’s ministry in your life, He will do these things for you.

Pray Out the Future
John 16:13 MEV
"But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own authority. But He will speak whatever He hears, and He will tell you things that are to come."
Everyone wants to know the future—it is one of the great unknowns for many people. People often pay a lot of money to hear predictions and forecasts. However, for believers, we have the Holy Spirit as our guide. If we are listening to Him in prayer, He will give us glimpses of the future. A new season? Trouble ahead? Something to prepare for? Whatever it may be, the Holy Spirit wants to give us a heads-up—if we are listening.
That’s where prayer comes in. It’s a two-way street: conversational, both talking and listening. Do you give adequate time to hear what the Spirit of God may be saying to you or impressing upon your heart? Don’t dismiss it; capture it! Remember what Jesus said to the churches in the book of Revelation: "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says."

Seeing and Hearing
John 5:19,30 MEV
"Then Jesus said to them, 'Truly, truly I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do. For whatever He does, likewise the Son does.... I can do nothing of Myself. As I hear, I judge. My judgment is just because I seek not My own will, but the will of the Father who sent Me.'"
As Jesus explained His intimate Father-Son relationship with God, He described His prayer life as a place of seeing and hearing. Everything Jesus did throughout the day was an outflow of His time with the Father. He would only say what He saw and only discern what He heard.
Isaiah 11:3 describes the ministry of Jesus: "He shall not judge by what his eyes see, nor reprove by what his ears hear." Jesus made it possible for us to have an intimate Father-Son relationship where we can see and hear the Father’s plan and purpose for our lives. When you cultivate this intimacy, you will have eyes to see and ears to hear.
